Media, Protest, discourse and cultural change by Neon Christina

I just watched this EPIC movie which I haven't seen in forever. -
Get this: Apparently when Basic Instinct (1992) came out there was an up roar from the gay community at the time against the movie saying that it was anti gay. Why? - the murder is a bisexual woman, the "real" lesbian of the movie is killed by the leading man, the obvious links between queer sexuality and violence, the bisexual woman and man end up together in the end, some of the dialogue for example when the male lead and the murder's girlfriend get in an argument and he refers to her as a man -- etc etc

Hmmm.
The director's response to all the protest was as such: "the issue is.. is that being gay is NOT an issue in the movie. It's pro gay from the beginning because being gay is an accepted fact in the plot. Making it as a non issue is the ultimate sign of being adult about it.. it (being gay) isn't an issue its a part of life." - Paul Verhoeven

So the dialogue becomes an overlap of where censorship, artistic expression, sexual politics and entertainment mix? In one aspect presenting gay characters in "darker" roles makes their sexuality a backdrop as a pose to the reason they are "dark" -- then again this walks the fine line of projecting negative stereotypes. Soooo

where does that leave us?

or
Is Mr. Paul Verhoeven right?
Is it not politically forward to have a "dark" character who isn't - white male and heterosexual?
Do all our protagonists need to be "the man"?
becuase i LIVE for a fierce bitch in control ... even if she is CRAZY

hmmm
read more about the protest here

None the less the discourse should indeed continue.
idk. It would indeed even things out to have more homosexual heros in film...

what do you think?
