As the conversation of "It Gets Better" continues in the gay community again and again I run into this conversation
Me: I Respect Dan Savage and the project
Friend: Really!?
Me: wait... you don't?
Friend: Don't you know that upper class privileged cunt is "out of touch"? - I mean have you seen his "it get's better" video with his blond buff husband and their beautiful trips to Paris
Me: No, - regardless its the message and not the messenger, right? I mean - for example, I make social political art and you think my paintings are going to pull at the strings of people's hearts in a day?.. it takes time. Cultural development isn't an easy road.
Friend: Right but ... Major problem is telling kids "there is a light at the end of the tunnel" and to "bare it out" is half the battle, they should also be told to fight back! Stand up for themselves. ACT UP! Also Dan Savage should be trying to make moves in the school system. If there is "real" pressure put on these teachers & administration to watch out and be the change in their school the effects would be immediate. Even if these teachers don't see eye to eye with the issues, if their jobs are on the line or a case can be easily be put against them in a court of law for not taking action, involuntary manslaughter for example, change would happen now! ... Because let's be real, cultural acceptance and change doesn't and won't happen over night as kids have no way out in the mean time. A youtube video is cute and inspirational but... ain't no body's superman in the line of some real shit going down.
Me: hmm. In turn - it is the visibility and up roar culturally of issues that bring them to the forefront for politicians to install change into our schools for example ... But you have a point - how many kids will die by then? .. I mean look at the back and forth with DADT. Every little bit counts but message and inspiration is only half the battle.
vs
hmmm
