As part of Rashaad Newsome’s solo exhibition at the New Orleans Museum of Art June 21st, 2013 he is creating his own Mardi Gras Krew called the "King of Arms krew.” During opening weekend of the exhibition, Sunday, June 23, 2013 the "King of Arms krew.” will conduct a procession from an undisclosed location to the museum where Newsome will be crowned “King of Arms” as he advances to senior ranking officer of arms. In line with his most recent pursuits of heraldry this step marks the final move in a video trilogy that started in 2010 with his installation “Pursuivant,” followed by “Herald” in 2011. Pulling from the history of Mardi Gras culture as well as England's annual service of the Order of the Garter, the procession will act as a social sculpture that brings together the various creative communities that make New Orleans the inspired and festive city it has always been. Also in line with Mardi Gras culture during Armory 2013 weekend The “King of Arms Krew” in collaboration with the house of Mizrahi, Mugler and Garçons will host "The King of Arms Art Ball." With judges from the art world as well as the vogue world, the "Art Ball" will combine art history with traditional Vogue ball categories, which will surely be a feast for the eyes and ears. The evening will be hosted by Dashaun Evisu, DJ Mike Q. on the wheels of steel, Commentators Kevin Jz Prodigy and Snookie Mizrahi on the mic.
