Bravo's "Work of Art"

Have you seen/ heard about this show? Work Of Art
It's like a project runway for fine artists. - Any thoughts ?

I asked a bunch of friends their thoughts -- check out one discourse between a close friend and I:
Friend:
My biggest question, How can you judge fine art? Especially in a public contest? These contestants are entering into a situation where their personality will inevitably b linked to their work, vice versa. Art survives on its own, its not an autograph.

(VERY TURE)

Me:
indeed
I will say though - i have just watched the entire season and it was reminiscent of my days in Fine Arts
with knowledge that its a TV show to the side..
The show did hold a relevance with me that I think doesn't call for the winner being called "the next great artist" but an artist on the rise .... yea .(why not)
Off hand the idea of artists being given "missions"/"challenges" does in the real world correlate to being commissioned for a certain project or event - which as a working artist does happens. One of the episodes was about making a piece for a book cover - which you would think is over commercial and ridiculous however it opened my eyes to hear that some of the most acclaimed artist of our time have made book art. Even CD covers - i.e. Andres Serrano did Metallica's "Load" album cover.
and PUMA commissions Contemporary Artist Kehinde Wiley to create portraits of African Football Players to Celebrate World Cup 2010 Campaign.

The art world is indeed just as commercial as design in many ways. Some of the challenges, pieces made on the show were actually pretty intelligent pieces. - from the conceptual to the visceral.
But then again don't get me wrong -- at the end of the day its just a TV show and that i guess could act as a great accolade to add to one's resume but doesn't indeed at ALL deem one the right to take on the title "the next great artist"-- that takes a bit more then some TV show lol

... I guess that's a given -- I mean project runway is great but you don't see the winners of that show working and going head to head with Marc Jacobs and Vera Wang.

It also comes up as then -- "well ... there isn't ONE way to be an artist.. what kind of artist do you want to be? one that would collab with Puma or one that only works on his/her own discourse and sells through a gallery..."

hmmm
all this rolling around my head at 5 am. I was talking to my mom about the show and she flipped and was like "OH BABI U SHOULD DO THAT" lol

trust me i doubt i will ... i think
just conversation in my brain about art, the art world and pop culture
